The Brothers’ War brings Transformers to MTG

November 18, 2022

The Brothers’ War, the latest expansion for Magic: The Gathering launches this week, and while the set is focused on a lore-heavy and important conflict in the MTG universe, what the general public might be interested to know is that it introduces Transformers.

You read that right – The Brothers’ War is the first mainline MTG set to incorporate the ‘Universes Beyond concept’, including Transformers like Optimus Prime and Megatron available in set and collector boosters, with some coming in unique borderless frames.

Beyond Robots in Disguise, The Brothers’ War expansion itself is the second chapter in the ongoing four-part Phyrexian invasion, depicting Planeswalker Teferi’s look into the past of the rivalry between Uzra and Mishra, otherwise known as the ‘Antiquities War’, which was first depictured in MTG‘s second ever expansion in 1994.

The set is heavily focused on mech warfare and artifacts, including the Powerstones first introduced in Dominaria United. ‘Prototype’ is a new mechanic enabling mechs to enter the battlefield in a weakened state ewith less mana, while older mechanics like ‘Meld’ and ‘Unearth’ also return.

The set includes 287 cards and releases on tabletop and Arena today, with 10 full art basic land cards available as well as retro reprints of classic MTG cards and retro ‘schematic’ versions as well. The two Commander Decks (built around Uzra and Mishra) will also feature every card with the retro frame treatment.

The Brothers’ War is available as Draft Boosters, Set Boosters, Collector Boosters, Jumpstart Boosters, Commander Decks and Bundles.
