PS5 and Xbox Series X Game Price Hikes Are Truly Upon Us

August 27, 2020

When 2K Games announced the NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition, they also announced something that gamers have been expecting and dreading: that PS5 and Xbox Series X game price would be higher than they are today. Retail prices for games have been stagnant for a few years now at roughly $99.95 RRP, which is in itself actually a decrease from the $109.95-119.95 RRP we got used to during the PS3/Xbox 360 generation. Now, however, we’re on the precipice of a reversion back to those higher costs.

Specifically, we’ve now had our second major publisher confirm that they would be increasing PS5 and Xbox Series X game prices compared to today. With the reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Activision also confirmed that they would be increasing next-gen game prices from $59.99 USD to $69.99 USD. This morning, we’ve seen confirmation that this has translated into a cost of $119.95, as per the EB Games website. This coincides with a price increase to the current gen version of the game to $109.95 from $99.95 for the last few iterations, and is also above the $109.95 EB Games has listed for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of NBA 2K21.

Both 2K Games and Activision have one other thing in common: Both companies aren’t supporting free upgrades from the current-generation versions to their next-generation versions with the standard game. You’ll have to buy a more expensive edition in both instances. While Ubisoft are currently supporting free next-gen upgrades, their somewhat vague statement of keeping next-gen game prices at their current cost this year seems to indicate that they are likely gearing up to increase prices as well.

Obviously we’re still at just the two publishers right now, but both are major forces in the industry. If all goes well for them, expect to see others jump on board and the cost of more PS5 and Xbox Series X games to increase next generation.
