Nintendo Teasing Something Splatoon Related

January 1, 2020

We’ve been in 2020 for less than a full day, but Nintendo have started the year running with an innocent at first glance New Year’s message that hides a teaser for something Splatoon related. The New Year’s message features some Salmonids using Golden Eggs in a long exposure to spell out 2020. Reflected in the waves, the 2020 becomes an SOS message, while further investigation shows letters in the waves, spelling out the messages ‘Save Our Salmons’. There certainly doesn’t seem to be much room to misinterpret the cry for help from the Salmonids here.

Given Nintendo officially ended content support for Splatoon 2 in December 2018, we don’t expect this tease to lead to an update to that game, although a larger expansion similar to 2018’s Octo Expansion is possible. Potentially though, we’re seeing a tease for a spin-off or new game, and given the nature of this tease, we’d expect that we would hear something in the near future.

Keep your eyes open for any new information as it comes, potentially later in January/February, when Nintendo traditionally holds a Nintendo Direct to outline the majority of the year’s line-up. In the meantime, check out our review of Splatoon 2 here.
