Borderlands 3: Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck Review

September 16, 2020

Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is the fourth story expansion for Borderlands 3 (check out our review here!) which puts you literally in the mind of Psycho Krieg, the playable psycho from Borderlands 2. While you don’t get to play as Psycho Krieg, you do get to learn more about him than you possibly ever wanted to. From blowing on meat horns to shooting down the moon to use as a catapult, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is as crazy as it sounds.

As usual, this story expansion starts from the Sanctuary. Once you take Sanctuary through space to Psycho Krieg you’ll teleport into the ‘Psychoscape’. This is your central hub and where the story begins. There’s a good Psycho Krieg and a bad Psycho Krieg who ramble on as the story progresses, taking you to three parts of his mind as you rebuild a statue that is used to open ‘Vaulthalla’ and defeat the final boss.

Psycho Krieg Meat Horn

While the first and third bosses are a bit disappointing (even if you get to see Lilith again), the second boss is where this story expansion shines. Deep inside Psycho Krieg’s mind lives a train named Locomobius. It’s a train that choo-choo-chooses to try and kill you whenever it gets the opportunity. As you progress through this middle section of the story, the Locomobius appears out of nowhere on its pink track and tries to run you over, all while you’re getting shot at and chased by all the different types of Borderlands 3 enemies you’ve come across in the main campaign.

Once you reach the end of the second mission, you must, of course, defeat the Locomobius. The train speeds around its giant lair popping in and out of warp holes and occasionally stops to let its commuters off – who are, of course, more enemies to kill. The boss fight is easily the best in the DLC and probably one of the best in the entire series, but unfortunately doesn’t make up for the rest of it. Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is a fairly short, linear, predictable story that doesn’t really leave you feeling like you’ve done anything amazing, other than bringing down Locomobius. Even the final boss fight once you get inside Vaulthalla was a total bore-fest where you’ll be more concerned about running out of ammo than dying.

Locomobius

Although you might read that this DLC comes with thirteen side missions, most of them are incredibly short, requiring you to do almost nothing at all as you listen to the two Psycho Krieg’s talking about their life. If you’re a huge Psycho Krieg fan then you’ll love it, but the jokes and themes get old fast, and combining that with the fact the missions are only really there to give you some cash, we ended up not looking forward to seeing an ! on the map. After you complete each of the three areas though, a final side mission unlocks which is strangely where the best stories are.

The Borderlands series isn’t known for staying shy of easter eggs, and we’re happy to say that this DLC is filled with them. Keep a look out for Spongebob, a Portal turret, and even the bank scene from The Matrix as you twist your way through Psycho Krieg’s mind. There are also plenty of secrets that will lead you to secret rooms filled with epic and legendary loot, some of which you’ll 100% miss if you don’t use a guide.

Psycho Krieg

Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is unfortunately more a fustercluck than it is fantastic. While it has a couple of memorable missions and environments that could only be imagined inside the mind of a psycho, there was very little exploration, dull side missions, no new enemies, and mostly boring boss fights. The main story takes just a few hours to complete depending on how many crates you loot and what difficulty you’re playing it on, and the side quests can be wrapped up in another couple. We did manage to level up five times, so expect to hit the new cap of 65 if you’ve played the other expansions.
