Tokyo Jungle to be released in English

June 13, 2012

Have you ever wanted to play as a Pomeranian? Admit it, I know you have. Now you can, with the previously Japan-only title Tokyo Jungle coming to PAL and North America’s PlayStation Network stores.

If you haven’t heard of it, Tokyo Jungle takes place in Tokyo (where else!) during the apocalypse, sending all manner of animals on the loose. You play as these animals (including a lion, horse, hippo, chicken and T-Rex!!), surviving the bleak wasteland while trying to discover the reason for the disappearance of mankind. Needless to say, it’s a very strange, but interesting concept, although the fact that it’s making over to English-speaking regions is one that raises eyebrows.

Scott Rohde, Sony’s Vice President of Product Development, had this to say in an interview with Joystiq earlier this week;

“It’ll ship here, it’ll ship everywhere. That game is just wacky, but in a good way, because we like to show that there’s still an art form, and you can still experiment. Is everyone gonna love a game like Tokyo Jungle? Absolutely not, but there’s a whole bunch of people it’s gonna make really happy. Specifically for the fact that it’s so different, and so unexpected. That’s a key part of the culture of Worldwide Studios and how our games are developed.”

Well, I suppose if games like The Last Guy can make it over, so can something like Tokyo Jungle.

No word on pricing or release date, but I’ll be keeping my eye out for this one.
