The Division to be Made into a Feature Film

August 3, 2016

Tom Clancy’s The Division is coming to the big screen in the form of a feature film starring Jessica Chastain (Mama, Interstellar) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko). Helmed by Ubisoft’s new film division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film will also have input from its stars’ production companies, Freckle Films and Nine Stories.

The Division franchise has the potential to make a decent motion picture if the writers run with the pandemic themes and the concept of sleeper agents ready to take action when the world falls into chaos, something that the game touched upon but didn’t fully explore, in my opinion.

The best parts of the game were stumbling across the smaller scale stories of regular civilians struggling to survive and the heinous actions of the various gang factions that rose up in the wake of the outbreak, so fingers crossed that the film follows those threads rather than simply giving us a jingoistic action blockbuster set against the backdrop of a city ravaged by disease.

Lord knows that Gyllenhaal can’t afford another Prince of Persia.

The Division is the latest film to be announced from Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ line-up, which includes the upcoming Assassin’s Creed, to be released in December, as well as films based on the Splinter Cell, Rabbids, Watch Dogs and Ghost Recon franchises.
