E3 2018: Tetris Effect brings Tetris to PlayStation VR

June 7, 2018

As part of Sony’s ‘Countdown to E3 2018’ program leading up to next week’s show, a PlayStation VR announcement was expected this morning – although nobody was quite expecting this. Tetris Effect is a brand-new take on the most classic puzzle game in the medium from Tetsuya Mizuguchi, responsible for synesthesic experiences like Rez and Lumines.

Developed by his Enhance Games studio, Tetris Effect is coming to PlayStation 4 with optional PlayStation VR support – the idea behind this mode, and the game as a whole is to maximise the scientific phenomenon actually known as the ‘Tetris Effect’, where individuals subconsciously recognise patterns in the world around them that remind them of Tetris, like stacking boxes. The game will feature 30 stages that are designed to immerse the player in some pretty trippy visuals, running at 4K/60 fps on PS4 Pro, or in stereoscopic 3D on PSVR.
