Major PS5 update brings official M.2 SSD support, UX enhancements

September 15, 2021

Overnight, PlayStation announced a new major software update for the PlayStation 5 is available today, with a bevvy of new features that are aimed at improving the console’s experience after almost a year on the market – although, sadly, still no folders yet.

The big updates are:

  • Official support for M.2 SSD expansion (with supported drives), which once installed be used to increase your PS5’s storage capacity to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games and apps. As noted in in our wrap-up of Seagate’s line-up of products for the year, the Firecuda 530 with Heatsink matches the specifications required for the PS5.
  • New UX enhancements for PlayStation 5, allowing customisation of the Game Base as well as easier management of PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game, along other upgrades.
  • 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers – which apparently uses the PlayStation 5 controller’s microphone to measure the acoustics in a room to work? Sounds weird, it’ll be interesting to see how well it works!
  • New social experience customisations, with new tools, trackers, personal best capture and accolades.

On PS4, the main update is the ability to view PS5 trophies for yourself as well as other players.

The PS Remote Play App and PS App now also allow play over mobile data networks, as well as WiFi, and an update next Thursday 23 September will allow users to view Share Screen broadcasts together.
