Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond join FIFA 23

September 22, 2022

Given the success and good will that feel-good football comedy Ted Lasso has generated so far over its two season run on Apple TV+, you’d think FIFA would be crazy not to participate in some cross-promotion. Luckily, it turns out that’s exactly what they’re doing as EA have announced that the fictional team from the show, AFC Richmond, will join FIFA 23.

Of course, that also means that the Jason Sudeikis’ portrayed Ted Lasso will also be a selectable manager of AFC Richmond in Career mode, and famous players Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya and Dani Rojas will all be featured as well. Their home ground, Nelson Road, will also be featured.

AFC Richmond will be selectable in multiple modes, including Career Mode, Kickoff, Online Friendlies and Online Seasons. Some AFC Richmond items like kits, tifos, Manager items and other content will be available to unlock across FIFA Ultimate Team and Pro Clubs. AFC Richmond will also be available as part of the  ‘Rest of the World’ league in Kick Off, Online Friendlies and Online Seasons.

Brett Goldstein, who portrays Roy Kent on the show, has probably the best available quote about the partnership, ““It is so f***ing cool to be in FIFA. I’m not sure this is going to help dispel the CGI rumours but f*** it, totally worth it. I look forward to beating my nephew in a game with me as Roy Kent and him as Jamie Tartt. He’s gonna be furious.”

You can check out the trailer below. FIFA 23 is out on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia and Xbox One on September 30, with early access for Ultimate Edition buyers beginning on September 27.
