Capcom has announced it is remaking the classic horror title Resident Evil 2 for current gaming systems.

Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer of the recent Resident Evil HD Remaster, made the project official in a video, stating Capcom’s R&D Division 1 is now officially greenlit to commence production.

Resident Evil 2 follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield escaping the zombie-infested Raccoon City. It is likely the remake is still a very long way off, as Hirabayashi explained that it shall ‘be some time before we can bring you an update on this project’.

It a statement to VideoGamer.com, Capcom said: “We’re pleased to confirm that Resident Evil 2 has been approved for development. As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don’t have any additional information or assets to share at this time.” The site believes the game shall be a fully-fledged remake of the original Resident Evil 2, developed for modern systems.

The Resident Evil 2 joins Final Fantasy VII as another long-awaited remake announced of late.
