Spider-Man Confirmed as PlayStation Exclusive for Marvel’s Avengers

August 4, 2020

We’ve been waiting a little while now to see which new characters would be announced for Marvel’s Avengers. We’ve had periodic confirmation of new characters such as Hawkeye along the myriad trailers that have been released, but there was one question on just about everyone’s lips. Would the menace Spider-Man be coming to Marvel’s Avengers?

Well, a handy PlayStation Blog post this morning has confirmed that Spider-Man would indeed be coming to Marvel’s Avengers. But there’s a catch. Unlike all of the other characters announced so far, Spider-Man will be exclusive to the PlayStation versions of the game.

This is likely to have something to do with the current licensing arrangement PlayStation has with Marvel surrounding Spider-Man in games following Marvel’s Spider-Man and the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. While many have rightfully pointed out that Sony only holds the exclusive licensing rights to Spider-Man in films, Marvel is clearly happy to keep it that way for games as well.

Spider-Man will come to Marvel’s Avengers for PlayStation platforms in 2021, while the game itself will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 4, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions coming in Holiday 2020. You’ll also be able to go hands on soon with the beta starting this week.
