After much rumor and speculation from various leaks, Nintendo & Yacht Club Games have officially unveiled the Shovel Knight amiibo at a special ‘Nindies@Night’ event during PAX Prime 2015 in Seattle, with help from YouTube group the Game Grumps, who made a special reveal trailer.

The amiibo will allow owners of the Wii U version of Shovel Knight to play a co-op mode exclusively in this version of the game. Those who own either the Wii U or 3DS version can also use the amiibo to customise and level up their Shovel Knight and take on special amiibo challenge levels. Yacht Club have also stated they plan to support amiibo in future Shovel Knight games, ensuring that the figure won’t just sit on your shelf collecting dust forever (unless you are one of those collectors that use their amiibo).

This marks the first amiibo based on an indie game, paving the way for potentially more indie titles – and maybe even more third party titles – to have their own amiibo in future.

No official release date or price has been announced for Australia at this time.
