PS5 announced for Holiday 2020, new controller features revealed

October 9, 2019

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, has announced via the official PlayStation Blog that Sony’s next generation console is officially called the PlayStation 5 and it will launch during the Holiday 2020 season.

Sony plan to reveal more information about the system over the next year, but in the meantime they have shared details about some exciting new features the system’s controller will have. Firstly, the controller will support haptic feedback which replaces the traditional “rumble” technology gamers have become accustomed to. Haptics will give players a broader range of feedback, such as crashing a car in a game feeling different compared to running on a grass field or plodding through mud.

Another new feature are adaptive triggers for the L2/R2 buttons. Developers can program the resistance (tightness) of the triggers, offering more tactile sensations that match the gameplay on-screen. Combined with the haptics, Sony believe this will provide better simulation and more powerful experiences for players.

Ryan also took a moment to remind fans that the PlayStation 4 still has many great games on the way including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima.
