PlayStation Announces Play At Home Initiative

April 15, 2020

With everyone stuck at home for weeks/months on end across the world, entertaining yourself might be harder said than done, especially as you begin to clear out that backlog of games and shows to binge. To help with this and give a little back to the community, PlayStation has announced the Play At Home initiative, which includes giving away some digital games that are free to keep forever and a fund to help Indie studios get through these hard times.

Between April 16th and May 6th you’ll be able to jump onto the PlayStation Store and download free copies of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. Both are fantastic games (In fact, we gave the PlayStation 4 release of Journey a perfect 5/5 in our review), with the collection of the initial trilogy of Uncharted games sure to keep your engrossed and engaged for hours, while Journey’s effortless connection with other players will charm and delight. Once redeemed within that window, both games are yours to keep forever, so even if you don’t plan to play them right now there’s absolutely no harm in making sure you add them to your account.

Along with these free games, PlayStation also announced a $10 million fund that will be used to support their independent development partners. Given the struggles that many Indie developers go through even at the best of times, it’s fantastic to see PlayStation doing something like this to help keep those studios alive. The full statement on the Creative Funding part of the Play At Home initiative can be read below:

Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.

During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment. At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment. We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners.
