At this point in time we’ve already seen the Xbox Series X and its games plenty of times, but the PlayStation 5 is still a relative unknown. We know its specs, we’ve seen its controller and we’ve also seen the announce of console exclusive game Godfall, but beyond that, we’re still largely in the dark regarding the console. With Sony doubling down on launching the console globally by the end of 2020, we’re fast running out of time to begin the big marketing cycle for the console, and they’re now looking to get that started with a PlayStation 5 Games Showcase next week.
While we obviously don’t have specific details on what games will be shown, the PlayStation Blog confirmed that the digital showcase would run for a bit over an hour, so it will be closer in length to one of their traditional E3 showings instead of a shorter State of Play. The announcement also makes mention of the types of studios working on PlayStation 5 Games:
“That’s why I’m excited to share that we will soon give you a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday. The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware.”
What that sounds like to us, is that we’ll see a good range of PlayStation 5 games at the event, with indies, AAA, older studios and brand new ones to all be present. Don’t be surprised if we get glimpses at some PlayStation first party studios and the large games they create, as well as smaller developers and the creative experiences they release. What you shouldn’t expect, however, is the announcement of a console release date, a reveal of the hardware itself or a price.
