Nintendo NX Software Development Kits Reportedly Being Distributed

October 19, 2015

In a report by the Wall Street Journal, it appears that Nintendo may have began to distribute development kits for their upcoming system, currently titled NX“.

The article states that people familiar with the development plans state that, “Nintendo will likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use.” This leads to what many speculated that Nintendo will be coming out with a hyrbrid system that can be used both at home on a TV and on the go.

The same experts also claim that Nintendo plans to “put industry leading chips in the NX devices”, citing the criticism many fans had of the Wii U’s lack of power as their motivation. Exactly what that means spec wise is unclear, but it does lead to speculation the system could at least be of a similar level to the PS4 in terms of raw horsepower.

It is also worth noting that around the same time this article came up, Nintendo also updated their developers site with a fresh new layout and with a focus on attracting new developers and publishers.

With this information, combined with the currently sparse release lineups for both Wii U and 3DS, analysts are predicting Nintendo may be looking to launch the NX as early as next year. However, as Nintendo has stated many  times, they have no plans of discussing their upcoming system further than what they already have up until 2016. Official confirmation of this NX speculation is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
