Nintendo make Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary announcements

September 4, 2020

Overnight Nintendo released a special Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct.

Rumours have been circulating for months concerning how Nintendo planned to celebrate the milestone anniversary of their plumber mascot. As it just so happens many of the leaks have turned out to be true, though Nintendo have managed to reveal a few extra surprises. Without further ado, here is everything that was announced during the Direct presentation.

Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. is set to be released on November 13th this year. It will include a copy of the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels. The system will also function as a clock, feature 35 “little touches” to discover, and include an updated version of the Game and Watch Ball title featuring Mario.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be released on 12th February, 2021 on Nintendo Switch. It is a port of the original Super Mario 3D World which was released on Nintendo Wii U, but with the added Bowser’s Fury content. More information will be revealed about the game in the near future. A special Cat Mario and Cat Peach Amiibo set will be released alongside the game.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members and is a battle royale game, similar to Tetris 99. In the game players will battle 34 opponents (35 players in total), with enemies you defeat being sent to other players’ courses. The game will be available from 1st October 2020 and can be played until 31st March 2021.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit brings the Mario Kart franchise into the real world. Players will control toy karts with cameras using their Nintendo Switch system. The karts stream their real world surroundings, making it seem as if you’re racing in your own living room. You can create the in-game track using special checkpoint markers. The game will be released on 16th October 2020.

Super Mario All-Stars has been confirmed to be joining the SNES games line-up for Nintendo Switch Online members. The game includes remastered versions of Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. It should be available some time today.

Perhaps the biggest announcement of the presentation is the confirmation of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. The collection includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. All three games will be presented in higher resolutions and there will be a music player mode where you can enjoy the games’ soundtracks. Super Mario 3D All-Stars will have a limited release, only being available both physically and digitally on Nintendo Switch from 18th September 2020 until 31st March 2021.

It was also announced that Mario Kart Tour will have a Super Mario Kart Tour event featuring appearances by Mario (Super NES) and Donkey Kong Jr. (Super NES) from the original Super Mario Kart. A 35th anniversary-themed Ninji Speedruns course will be coming to Super Mario Maker 2 in November. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will host an online tournament later in the year featuring Super Mario fighters, stages and items.

A Super Mario themed Splatfest will be coming to Splatoon 2 in January 2021, asking players which power-up item they prefer – Super Mushroom or Super Star? Keychains will be made available as a My Nintendo reward closer to the Splatfest. Physical Splatfest T-shirts will also be made available.

Last but not least, Super Mario themed furniture will be made available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March 2021.
