Gamescom 2020: Check Out The Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Gameplay Demo

August 29, 2020

As we grow closer and closer to the seeming November launches of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, there’s one thing we need to see more of: games. While we’re obviously still awaiting details on prices and launch as well, the more games we see, the better. Games are what sell us on a generation of consoles and PlayStation have had just the one good showing so far. Now, as part of Gamescom Opening Night Live, Insomniac have delivered an extended version of the previously shown Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay demo.

There’s not much new to the demo if you already watched the trailer from June’s PS5 Games Showcase, but this marks the first extended and uninterrupted look at a PS5 exclusive we’ve got. The demo takes place as Ratchet and Clank fall out of dimensional rift and immediately continue chasing after Doctor Nefarious. Nefarious is behind the dimensional rifts, ripping apart the fabric of reality using the Dimensionator. Through their chase of Nefarious, the demo shows off a variety of the game’s whacky weapons, alongside the new mechanics. Ratchet is now able to interact with rifts in the World, pulling the world towards him and shifting in space. It’s the perfect example of something that couldn’t have been done on current generation hardware.

There were plenty of particle effects in the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart extended gameplay demo, as bullets flew and boxes were smashed to pieces, while the environments were incredibly dense. Raytraced reflections were clearly evident, with detailed reflections clearly visible on metallic and glass surfaces. This is easily the PS5’s first game to truly show off how good next-gen gaming can look.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will release exclusively for PlayStation 5 in the console’s launch window (We expect this to be the first 3-6 months). For more information, check out the official PlayStation Blog post.
