Final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters revealed

November 2, 2018

During this morning’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct presentation, producer Masahiro Sakurai revealed the final three characters that will be joining the playable roster for the game.

First up, there was a joint reveal trailer for both Ken from Street Fighter and Incineroar from Pokemon Sun/Moon. Ken is based on his Super Street Fighter II Turbo appearance but uses a range of moves and abilities from the entire Street Fighter series including Heavy Shoryuke, Hadoken, Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, Hell Wheel and Focus Attack. He is an echo fighter for Ryu but moves a little faster and has two final smashes; Shinryuken and Shippu Jinraikyaku.

Incineroar acts as a bit of a pro-wrestler and even strikes poses for the audience whenever he performs well – don’t worry, you can cancel the poses at anytime! His moves include Darkest Lariat, Cross Chop, Irish Whip, Lariat, Revenge and Max Malicious Moonsault, the latter being his final smash.

While not available immediately at launch, Sakurai revealed that early adopters of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will get the new fighter Piranha Plant… Yep, you read that correctly, the Piranha Plant from Super Mario will be a playable character! You must register the game via My Nintendo Rewards by January 31, 2019 to get the character for free. Piranha Plant unleashes poison breath, melee attacks and summons Petey Piranha for its final Smash. The character is expected to be available to download in February 2019.

Similar to Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, there will be additional paid DLC fighters coming post launch. Five new fighters are planned, though we currently do not know who they will be. The packs will cost US$5.99 each or you can purchase a Fighter Pass for $24.99 which will give access to all DLC fighters as they become available. Fighters will come with a new stage and a selection of music tracks. Sakurai warned it may take up to a year to release all the DLC fighters.
