E3 2018: PlayStation E3 Press Conference Wrap-Up

June 12, 2018

With many touting Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference as a success this year, all eyes were on Sony this morning to see how the company would be handling their E3 showcase.

As expected Sony didn’t really announce any new first party games, but instead dazzled and excited gamers with in-depth gameplay demonstrations of their main titles. This year, Sony took a unique approach by having their live audience move across two theatres – the first was a cowboy shed filled with fairy lights which they used to immerse the crowd into the world of The Last of Us Part II. After the audience was treated to an extended look at Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated game, they were moved to a more traditional dome area to continue the conference.

Here is the full wrap-up of what happened throughout Sony’s E3 2018 press conference:

  • The conference began with an extended trailer of The Last of Us Part II, featuring both cinematics and gameplay of protagonist Ellie.
  • As the live audience moved to the second area, the conference entered an intermission, but for viewers streaming at home Sony provided some live commentary.
  • The commentary including discussions of the just shown The Last of Us Part II footage, as well as some news that had been doing the rounds in recent weeks.

  • New Game Plus mode was confirmed to be coming to God of War
  • While it had previously been revealed that remastered multiplayer maps from Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 were going to be coming to Black Ops 4, the maps will also be available separately for Black Ops 3. Those who pre-order Black Ops 4 on the PSN will instantly get the maps for FREE for Black Ops 3.
  • But what if you don’t own Black Ops 3 on PS4? Well, Sony has PS Plus subscribers covered, as the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be available as part of their monthly free games.

  • As the live audience entered the second area they were treated to a flute soloist who played some traditional Japanese music.
  • The lights dimmed and a the debut gameplay trailer for Ghost of Tsushima was shown
  • Too much applause, Remedy’s new game was finally revealed. It’s called Control, and appears to star a female protagonist who has telekinetic powers
  • A Resident Evil 2 remake by Capcom was revealed to be in development, and will be released on January 25, 2019

  • A teaser trailer for Trover Saves the Universe was shown. It’s a new platformer game from the co-creator of Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland. It has a very similar sense of humour as Rick and Morty.

  • A brand new trailer for Kingdom Hearts III was shown, featuring characters from Pirates of the Caribbean. The character model of Captain Jack Sparrow in particular looks almost stunning when compared to Johnny Depp’s likeness.
  • A Kingdom Hearts III PS4 Pro limited edition console will be released alongside the game.
  • A full retail package of all the main line Kingdom Hearts games will also be released exclusively on PS4

  • A trailer for Death Stranding was shown, featuring some actual gameplay footage of the title in action. Though, to be frank the game is still weird and as confusing as ever… In a good way!

  • An announcement teaser was shown revealing Nioh 2 is in development. No information regarding systems or release date was confirmed, though we can guess it will be appearing on PS4.
  • Sony ended their E3 conference with an extended look at the upcoming Spider-man . The gameplay trailer showcased several iconic villains that will be appearing in the game.
