E3 2017: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Finally Revealed

June 13, 2017

After months of rumours and multiple leaks, Shigeru Miyamoto has joined Yves Guillemot on stage at Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference to officially confirm and reveal Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Not only was the game revealed at Ubisoft’s press conference, but it actually got the most stage time of any game shown there, including Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed: Origins.

The earlier rumours talked Mario and Rabbids being split between two modes, exploration and battle, which was confirmed to be exactly how the game works in practice. In Exploration you don’t directly control the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom or the rabbids, instead controlling a small UFO-like rabbid that the others follow. The gameplay demo showed a few different environments you will explore during the game, which actually look more expansive than I personally expected.

Once you enter into a combat zone, it’s time to take direct control of your characters to wipe out the evil enemy rabbids in an XCOM style turn based strategy battle. You’ll be able to take cover behind walls, although cover isn’t permanent and can be destroyed by enemy fire, flank enemy for  higher chances at hitting them from the sides and back, and use tactical abilities such as Mario’s ability to shoot any enemy that moves in front of him. You’ll also have the ability to jump off other characters, similar to in Disgaea (except more streamlined), to allow for further movement and better positioning.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle will be available exclusively for Nintendo Switch on August 29.
