Blue Ringed Octolings Crowned AUNZ Splatoon Champions

April 29, 2017

Blue Ringed Octolings, showing incredible resilience to come from behind, have defeated $¢arthAce in front of an electric live crowd to be crowned the first ever Splatoon grand champions for Australia and New Zealand. As winners of the tournament, run by Nintendo Australia and the Australian E-Sports League, Blue Ringed Octolings took home some cool Inkling trophies, a Nintendo Switch and copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe each, and will be jetting off to Los Angeles to attend E3 2017!

The elite skills of both Blue Ringed Octolings and $¢arthAce were on show as the first round of the best-of-nine round grand final went to $¢arthAce in an overtime thriller. From there the two teams traded blows, each winning their chosen map and mode combinations to take the score to 2-2 before $¢arthAce skipped away to 4-2, only needing one more win to take home the trophy. In the next round Blue Ringed Octolings came out swinging, refusing to give up and fighting back again and again to keep themselves in the final. The best moment of the final came in the final round, as Blue Ringed Octolings threw caution to the wind with an incredible aggressive opening push in Tower Control which saw them set and then defend a match winning lead in the opening minute of the game.

The skills on show really hammered home just how much of an eSports powerhouse Splatoon could be in the future and bodes incredibly well for when Splatoon 2 releases on July 21st for Nintendo Switch.
