Zelda: Breath of the Wild Wii U confirmed for March 3

January 13, 2017

Amongst all the excitement of the Nintendo Switch news today, it seems like the Wii U is all but a memory. However, Nintendo fans shouldn’t forget the system’s swan song, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is still planned for release. Nintendo confirmed via Twitter today that the Wii U version will be sharing its release date with the Nintendo Switch, March 3 this year.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced in 2013 during a Nintendo Direct, but wasn’t properly revealed until 2014 much to the excitement of fans. It was originally promised to be launching in 2015, but was delayed to 2016. Rumours quickly spread that the game was being pushed back so that a Nintendo Switch, then named NX, version could be developed. Shortly after another delay pushed it back to 2017, Nintendo confirmed a Switch version was in development alongside the Wii U version.

Breath of the Wild‘s history mirrors The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which itself was originally in development for the Nintendo GameCube but would also be released on the Nintendo Wii.
