Aussie developer Barrel of Donkeys have scheduled Toybox, their combination shoot-’em-up and match-three puzzler for iPhone and iPod Touch, for release on the 23rd of August. Toybox tasks players with attempting to shoot down enemy fighter planes on one side of the screen, while simultaneously trying to match coloured blocks on the other side. It looks simple, but is much harder than you’d expect. An extra layer is added when you consider that both parts of the game interact with each another. As players destroy enemies of a particular color, they receive a block of that color in the puzzle section. Meanwhile, successfully matching blocks in the puzzle section will earn players extra lives and power-ups for the shooter side. The game will receive a new level every week, according to Barrel of Donkeys:
Everyone faces the same enemy patterns for a week, giving you the chance to learn them and improve. Then after a week the patterns change—so there’s always a new challenge and a fresh leaderboard to climb.

We’ve managed to get our hands on this little gem, so look forward to Rocket Chainsaw’s review of Toybox, which will be available very soon.
