Sega announces Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Another racing outing has been announced for Sonic and his friends, as Sega unveiled Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed today.

A sequel to 2010′s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Transformed brings transforming vehicles into the mix, allowing players to seamlessly shift from driving a car, to flying a plane and steering a boat as the course changes. No doubt this will seem familiar to players of last year’s Mario Kart 7, which similarly included underwater and flying gameplay sections.

New characters included in Transformed are Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe and Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. Super Monkey Ball and Panzer Dragoon tracks have also been confirmed. A new ‘fair’ weapon system has also been implemented that allows players to block or evade attacks once they have gained the skills to do so. An enhanced online multiplayer mode, Grand Prix mode and Battle Arenas mode are all set to return as well.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is due to be released in late 2012 on PS3, 360, PC, 3DS and Vita, and no doubt we’ll be hearing more about it come E3.

It’s interesting that they’ve dropped the Sega part of the name. Anyway, the concept trailer was interesting enough, I look forward to seeing how it all works in the actual game.

Instead of using the characters from past great games, maybe they should make new great games. I would love a new Panzer Dragoon or Skies.

@Cyph: Those are both past games. New IP is what you’re after, not new sequels.
