PlayStation VR Launch Guide

October 11, 2016

The PlayStation VR will launch worldwide this Thursday, October 13th. For many gamers this will be their first experience with VR, while others may have had the opportunity to try out a demo unit or use a competing platform. Regardless, it can be confusing about what equipment you need to get started, and what games are available from launch. To assist our readers, we’ve decided to create this PlayStation VR Launch Guide which we hope will answer some questions.

Cost and Where to Buy:

The PlayStation VR headset retails for AU$549.95. Retailers JB Hi-Fi and EB Games have already exhausted their allocated launch stock, though they are taking pre-orders for a second shipment that is due later this year. It’s possible other retailers may have stock, though at this stage we recommend pre-ordering a unit from the second shipment. You can always cancel the pre-order if you find a launch unit!

What Setup Do I Need?:

Aside from a PS4 console (any model), it’s important to note that PlayStation VR requires the PlayStation 4 Camera accessory to operate. The camera is sold separately for AU$89.95, but if you already own one then you are good to go.

The PS4’s DualShock controller is used to control most games, but some titles will also support the PlayStation Move controllers. Move controllers that were purchased for the PS3 will work on PS4. Sony has also renamed the controllers under the PlayStation VR brand, with twin packs available for purchase from 13 October for AU$119.95.

The VR headset itself comes with a connection cable, HDMI cable, USB cable, stereo earbuds, a power cord and a demo disc. The disc features demos of the following games:

  • RIGS Mechanized Combat League
  • PlayStation VR Worlds
  • Driveclub VR
  • Battlezone
  • Tumble VR
  • Eve: Valkyrie
  • Wayward Sky
  • Headmaster
