PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Announced

1

All those rumours finally come to fruition. Today Sony announces PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale for the PlayStation 3. A side scrolling beat-em-up brawler developed by SuperBot Entertainment, Battle Royale will have you punching, kicking, slicing, dicing, blasting, rapping and so much more with your favourite, iconic ’PlayStation’ branded characters. A cast built from Sony owned intellectual properties, and third party characters known for appearing on Sony platforms, will be coupled with battle stages and arenas equally stylised after PlayStation franchises, themselves mixing themes and styles. Ever wondered how Hades from God of War would react to an invasion of Patapons? Now you can find out.

The objective in each stage is simple: beat the hell out of your opponent to score points. Each character has a special energy bar. Filling this bar, by using standard attacks, allows characters to unleash three tiers worth of super special attacks. In order to score points, players must use these special attacks to defeat opponents. Low level special attacks will be quicker to charge, though may not knock out opponents, meanwhile level three specials are almost guaranteed multiple points.

Though Sony is promising many characters to be revealed (we’re looking at you, Mr. Drake), SuperBot has revealed some of the cast. So far players can look forward to battling with:

  • Kratos from God of War
  • Colonel Radec from Killzone 2
  • PaRappa from PaRappa the Rapper
  • Fat Princess from Fat Princess
  • Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal
  • Sly the Raccoon from Sly
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Announced will feature both single player and multiple player (local and online) modes, and will no doubt be fully revealed at E3 2012. Check out Sony’s first footage of the game below.

Colour me surprised, I really didn’t think this game would turn out to be anything more than a rumour. Looks decent so far, I’ll be interested to see which other characters get in (other than Drake).

Plus to Sony for including PaRappa in it.

As for the game itself, I don’t know what to think. At the very least, it looks like it will be a competent Smash Bros clone but from the gameplay footage, it feels like they’ve extracted the gameplay from Brawl and placed Sony characters in it. At least it will have better online than Brawl’s lagfest.

Other attempts at this genre have been mediocre at best (the TMNT one and the “Tales of” fighter as well), so good on Sony for this effort.

I wonder how Snake will fit into this, considering how he’s Brawl (and a damn good character as well).

After looking at the games Omar Kendall has been involved in previously – Yeah, not interested. Looks like a complete rip-off of Smash anyway, which is not a fighting game franchise I’m that fond of.

It’s not great, but I look at the second part as a subtitle (Sony should stylise it like that). PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. I doesn’t look much worse than a name like Super Smash Bros: Melee.

I thought this game was just a stupid rumour/joke.
