Pikmin Coming to Nintendo 3DS

September 2, 2016

To finish off today’s 3DS focused Nintendo Direct, Nintendo decided to surprise us all by doping one final bomb rock, in the form of the Pikmin series making it’s 3DS debut.

While it has been known for some time a new Pikmin game was in the works, very few speculated it would be a 3DS title given the traditional Acton/RTS style gameplay is not best suited for such small screens. It seems Nintendo felt the same way and decided for the series first handheld iteration to take a different approach than usual, in the form of a 2D platformer.

While taking a new perspective, Pikmin 3DS still carries over many of the franchise’s key elements, mainly the focus on managing your different coloured Pikmin and their unique abilities to solve various puzzles, take on a multitude of enemies and collect plenty of treasure. In the Direct it was pointed out the game is being designed with “action in mind” with more of a focus on players having to think on their feet than they have in previous Pikmin titles.

The game has no official title yet (tentatively called Pikmin 3DS) and is slated for a 2017 release.
