Kara: Making Of video released

March 23, 2012

Chances are by now you’ve seen Quantic Dream’s spectacular GDC offering, a tech demo called Kara, featuring an all-too-lifelike android who, during her automated build process, mysteriously becomes self-aware and pleads with her creator to spare her ‘life’. While this is unlikely to become a game in and of itself, with Quantic Dream keen to stress that it is not in fact footage from any video game currently in development, it’s certainly not the first time their tech demos have impacted future releases. In 2005 they debutedĀ “The Casting”, a demo with remarkable visual and stylistic similarities to their 2010 award-winning title Heavy Rain, itself at the forefront of graphical technology at the time.

It comes as no surprise, then, that Kara has received significant attention and critical acclaim, leading Sony and Quantic Dream to release behind the scenes footage of its creation. This 6 minute video features a look at casting the role of Kara, early artwork for the video and the voice and motion capture processes, as well as brief interviews with the staff.
